THE LAST LETTER

I was going through my grandfather’s boxes in the attic because they are moving his things out of the old house. I found something. I found a chest of old photos and some letters he wrote my grandmother. He fought in Vietnam and he wrote letters to her every day. He told her about the friends he fought with and the places they went.

The letters talked about his assignments and the beauty of the country. Sometimes he wrote about how much he missed her and how he couldn’t wait to see her again. I found so many letters, but at the bottom of the chest there was a letter that had not been opened. I asked my grandmother why she didn’t open it. She told me it was three weeks before he was supposed to come home, when they were ambushed. She got the news that he had been killed two weeks later. She said it didn’t seem real. She couldn’t believe he wasn’t coming home. Then, a week later, on the day he was supposed to come home, she got a letter: a letter from Grandpa. She said she almost opened his last letter.

She had been saving it all this time. She smiled at me, and told me to open it. I opened it and began to read:
